Author Interview Response (Due Friday, January 13th)

Watch the interview above; then, write a response of at least five sentences.  Your response should include your reaction to Lois Lowry.  Did anything about her appearance surprise you?  Were you surprised by anything she said?  Are there any questions that you wish you could ask her?  What do you think The Giver will be about based on this interview?

  1. Lois Lowry surprised me a lot. I thought that she would be younger and could remember stuff, like when her Newberry Award winning book was published. I also thought that she should have named the category that she thought the book was in. I would ask her that if I could. I thought that it was a lot like Harrison Bergeron in the way that the main character tries to rise up at the end.
I think that The Giver will be odd at some parts and crazy in others. I think that the chapters will be all composed of different dystopia thoughts.

  2. I was suprised how she didnt make a big deal about anything. I was suprised about her age and she also how she seemed like wining the Newberry Award was no big deal. She couldn't even remeber when it was published.

  3. William here. I was surpised that this older lady could put us in the mind of a 12 year old boy. I felt in the story that was exactly what I would do in the situation. I cant believe that its almost censored or challenged. Its a sophisticated book, but it doesnt seem like it should be censored. My favorite part is midway through the 1st chapter, when he home alone, and thinks how everything is kind of eerie.

  4. I,m surprised Lois Lowry was so forgetful about her book. I was surprised about her age because I thought she would be younger. I was surprised she said she describe her book as science fiction because he doesn't like that genera. I would ask her why she wrote the book and what inspired her. I think the giver will be about this boy trying to change the world he lives in because its not perfect

  5. I am surprised by Lois Lowry forgot so much about her book. I thought that she was so old and modest. She acted like getting a Newberry Award was like going to the dentist. I would ask her why she was inspired to write such a crude book. I think Jonah is trying to change his world.

  6. I was surprised that Lois Lowry was as old as she was. She acted like nothing was a big deal. When she was talking about her Newberry award, she acted like it was unimportant. I was also surprised that she couldn't remember stuff about the book, like when it was published. When I first saw her, I was surprised that this was the author of a dystopia book.

  9. When I saw here I thought, "Oh, thats a nice old woman no chance she'd write a dystopia book of that magnitude." I was so wrong. She also acted like getting a Newberry was like going to the grocery store. I was like. "So, how many times have you won a Newberry award? I've got three." It was kinda weird how she forgot so much about her book.

  11. I was surprised about how old and forgetful she was, she doesn't even remember when it was published. She acted as if getting a Newberry award was no big deal, she doesn't care about it or something. I was also surprised that she writes dystopia books. I would never of thought she was so old, could not remember much about her book and that she doesn't really care about getting a Newberry.

  12. I was surprised when i saw her. She looked like she didn't like anything. But the book she wrote is the best. The question that i would ask her why she wrote the book. That is all i have to say.

  13. I think that Lois Lowry was trying to get a point out that she was proud of her book, but at the same time a little aware of some schools banishing the book. I was also suprised about the fact that in thaat world, there was no money or seregation. I think that it would be an odd sort of future, and I think she was proud of what she has written, and she should be.
