In class, you will pick one of the poets below.  This week. you should begin researching your poet's life at the following website:

  1. I picked Seamus Heaney, a poet from Ireland. He was born is Castledawson, Country Derry, Northern Ireland. A fact about Seamus is that he is one of the major poets of the 20th century. He has also won a nobel prize. His poetry is known for aural beauty and finely-wrought textures.

  2. I picked Edger Allen Poe. I picked him because my dad said he was his favorite poet,and I wanted to learn more about him.He was born in 1809,and died in 1849.He went to UVA, and has a sculpture of a raven in his room in honor of one of his most famous poems.

  5. My poet is named Walt Whitman. He lived from May 31, 1819 to March 26, 1892. A fact that you probably don't know about him is that he was a nurse during the Civil War. He was usually a clerk, but when he had time, he dressed wounds in the infantry. He kind of looks like that guy from the Directv commercials that adopts stray animals. He also has a bridge named after him that goes from New Jersey to Philadelphia.

  6. more than two cool things about Shel Silverstein.He writes lots of children books.He was a poet, song writer, and performer.He also was a cartoonist, recording artist, grammy winning, oscar nominated, songwriter.

  7. William Blake was an interesting person he was a painter a print maker AND a poet. He was a very important figure in all of them.

  8. The poet that I picked was Billy Collins and according to his Wikipedia article, he is a very interesting person. Collins is a professor of English, and has taught at many places, among these places are: Ireland, and New York. He has many books of poems published.
    His awards include:

    1983, Fellowship from the New York Foundation for the Arts
    1991, National Poetry Series publication prize - winner, Questions About Angels
    1992, New York Public Library 'Literary Lion'

  9. The poet I picked was Pablo Neruda. I chose him because Dr.Seuss was taken and he had the best name. An interesting fact about him is that his birth name is not Pablo Neruda. He changed it for reasons I do not know yet. His real name was Neftalí Ricardo Reyes Basoalto.

  10. The poet I picked was Gwendolyn Brooks. She was the first black poet to win the Pulitzer Prize. She was also the poetry consultant to the Library of Congress. Her other awards include...

    1968, appointed Poet Laureate of Illinois.

    1985, selected as the Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress, an honorary one-year position whose title changed the next year to Poet Laureate.

    1988, inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame.

    1994, chosen as the National Endowment for the Humanities' Jefferson Lecturer, one of the highest honors in American literature and the highest award in the humanities given by the federal government.

    1995, presented with the National Medal of Arts.

    1995, honored as the first Woman of the Year chosen by the Harvard Black Men's Forum.

    Brooks died at age 83 on December 3, 2000, at her Southside Chicago home. She is buried at Lincoln Cemetery in Blue Island, Illinois.

  11. Charles Wright was born on August 25,1935, in PIckwick Dam Tennessee. He was educated at the Davidson college. He also was educated at the Iowa University of Writer's Workshop. He started reading and writhing poetry while stationed in Italy. He was there for four years. His first seres of poems was published in 1970.

  12. My favorite poet is Robert Frost. He was born August 23 , 1876. He grew up in a poor family, but became successful because of his poems. He won four Pultzier poem prizes, and is regarded as one of the most famous poets.

  13. My poet is Langston Houghs. He was born February,1,1902. Langnston Houghs had many odd jobs including being a crewman on the S.S Malone on wich he traveled from Europe to West Africa. He was also one of the first people to creat jazz poetry. Langston Houghs had a very interesting life.

  14. DR.Suess was born in 1904 and died in 1991. DR. suess's real name is actualy Theodor Geisel. He was also the best-selling childrens book. he didn't want to be a writer but wanted to be a English professer. He died in the year 1991.

  16. William Butler Yeats was considered one of the best poets in the 20th century. He lived to 75 years old and when he was 60, his health was not good. The last 15 years he continued to write plays. Sean
